At an event to mark Earth Day, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, said he is optimistic Indonesia can achieve net-zero emissions, or zero carbon emissions, sooner than the target year.

“Indonesia to this day has been one of the most efficient references in managing new and renewable energy,” he remarked at an online press conference originating from Jakarta on Thursday.

At an Earth Day event on April 22, 2021, Pandjaitan emphasized that Indonesia would continue to take steps to end the use of fossil energy — a source of carbon emissions — as quickly as possible and switch to new and renewable energy.

Efforts are being made to achieve net-zero emissions to mitigate climate change and check global warming, marked by an increase in global temperatures, he informed.

“We will continue to push this target so that we can possibly be faster than what (the year) we have previously mentioned of 2060. The government will work hard for this,” the minister said.

He praised the move by transportation application company Grab to encourage more electric vehicle-based transportation in support of the government’s efforts to accelerate the battery-based electric motor vehicles program.

The government is targeting to put two million units of battery-based electric vehicles (KBLBB) on the road and increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix to 23 percent, or 24 thousand MW, by 2025.

At the same press briefing, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Arifin Tasrif, said that he would continue to build infrastructure to support the use of battery-based electric vehicles (KBLBB) in Indonesia.

As of April, 2021, a total of 122 charging stations have been built in 83 locations spread across several areas, such as gas stations, hotels, shopping centers, and parking areas, as well as resting places on toll roads, he informed.

“According to the roadmap that has been prepared, it is hoped that by 2025, 3,860 Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLUs) can be built, with a total of 39,627 electric vehicle units,” Tasrif said.
