The Bank Indonesia (BI) Representative Office in Bengkulu province has asked the public to remain alert for fake banknotes during the fasting month of Ramadhan.

The BI office is coordinating with the law enforcement agency in curbing the circulation of fake currency in the province during Ramadhan, chief of the BI Office, Joni Marsius, said here on Tuesday.

“We will provide law enforcement agency personnel with inputs on the technique of falsifying banknotes and support them in combating the circulation of fake banknotes,” he informed.

As part of efforts to thwart the circulation of fake banknotes, he appealed to the people of Bengkulu province to opt for e-transactions during Ramadhan.

Using e-transactions is also one of the ways to avoid being exposed to COVID-19 since they are not made face-to-face, he said.

“Use indirect contact service, for instance, the online market. Remember the pandemic is still ongoing, so the public should be wise in making transactions,” he advised.

He said the government has provided a wide range of e-transaction facilities, including the Quick Response Indonesia Standard (QRIS).

Nearly 40 thousand merchants in Bengkulu have been connected to QRIS, accounting for 53 percent of the target of 75,400 for 2021, he disclosed.

“With the introduction of QRIS, the public no longer needs to have various types of digital money. It is enough to have savings by installing mobile banking. So, they no longer need to show cards but through their mobile phone, they can pay (for something),” he explained.
