Indonesia’s Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono is using the government intervention strategy to develop the marine and fisheries sectors, especially in implementing the government’s blue economy programs.
Through the strategy, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is preparing to play a bigger role in building marine and fisheries infrastructure, especially to push an increase in the productivity of the main players in the fisheries sector and to support food security.
“If government intervention is carried out, I am confident that these sectors can advance rapidly. This kind of strategy is also being implemented in other countries,” Trenggono said in Jakarta on Thursday.
Trenggono had implemented the strategy during his previous ministerial term, including by building a Modern Fishers’ Village in Biak, Papua.
In Samber-Binyeri Village, Biak, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries built fisheries infrastructure to transform the traditional fishing village into a modern, productive, and competitive one.
He added that the intervention strategy will also be used to improve the welfare of fishers and farmers, namely by increasing the exchange rate for fishers and farmers, which is an indicator of their purchasing power, to 200 points from the current average of 104–106 points.
He further said that for years, the exchange rate has been at around 104 to 106, which, according to him, is still in the poor category. Therefore, he is striving to increase its value.
The improvement of the welfare of the main players in fisheries such as fishers and farmers, he added, would have a big impact on the productivity of the fisheries sector, allowing it to contribute optimally to supporting national food security.
During the almost four years of his leadership of the ministry, Trenggono has built four sustainable farming modeling projects, namely lobster farming in Batam, white shrimp farming in Kebumen, seaweed farming in Wakatobi, and salinity-tolerant tilapia cultivation in Karawang.
