Finance Ministry to be Responsible Directly to President Prabowo

Finance Ministry to be responsible directly to President Prabowo

Indonesia’s Finance Ministry will be under the direct responsibility of President Prabowo Subianto in the new cabinet structure, breaking from its current arrangement of being attached to a coordinating ministry, according to a ministry official.

“The Finance Ministry is responsible directly to the president,” the ministry’s Communication and Information Service Bureau Head, Deni Surjantoro, confirmed here on Tuesday.

The current arrangement is stipulated in Presidential Regulation No. 139 of 2024 on Duties and Functions of Ministries in the Red and White Cabinet, signed by President Prabowo Subianto on October 21, 2024.

Under the law, the Finance Ministry will operate independently of any coordinating ministry, as no such assignment has been made.

Surjantoro stated that the extensive functions and scope of work of the ministry, headed by Sri Mulyani Indrawati, are behind the decision to relieve the Finance Ministry from any coordinating ministry.

“The ministry’s authority also covers cross-sectoral coordination and supervisory works,” he remarked.

This marked a shift from earlier arrangements, as during Joko Widodo’s presidency, the finance minister was attached to the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, as per Article 4 of Presidential Regulation No. 37 of 2020.

Meanwhile, under Prabowo, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs will be responsible only to ministries assigned to manpower, industry, trade, energy and mineral resources, state-owned enterprises, investment and downstreaming policies, and tourism portfolios.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto confirmed on Monday that President Prabowo will adjust the number of ministries under his coordination.

He explained that the adjustment encompassed the inclusion of ministries in the energy, investment, and tourism portfolios under the coordinating ministry, which shifted from the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs during Widodo’s presidency, albeit abolished under the current administration.
