Indonesia Seeking Retail Boost for Economy

Indonesia seeking retail boost for economy

“The government supports the shopping program in Indonesia. If we can get half (the value) of Indonesians shopping abroad, then it will boost purchases.”

Indonesia is hoping to stoke economic growth by increasing income from the retail sector, according to Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto.

Household consumption contributed up to 54 percent to the national economy in the second quarter of this year, he noted. Therefore, the government is supporting the program of retail entrepreneurs to purchase products in the domestic market

“National economic growth must be higher than 5 percent; one thing that can be boosted is household consumption–which contributes 54 percent,” he added here on Wednesday.

By supporting the domestic shopping program, he said, at least the community can contribute to boosting purchases.

According to Hartarto, all products from abroad can be obtained in Indonesia, so people no longer need to shop in other countries.

“The government supports the shopping program in Indonesia. If we can get half (the value) of Indonesians shopping abroad, then it will boost purchases,” he explained.

He said that the number of retailers in a country can be one indicator of national economic growth.

Based on the World Bank report, the consumption or retail sector in Indonesia has continued to grow since 2022. Malls in Indonesia are among the best and most modern shopping centers, especially in the Jakarta area.

The retail sector in Jakarta is strong, according to the minister, because its per capita income has crossed the middle-income threshold.

The average income in Jakarta has reached US$20 thousand or Rp300 million per year, which is driving the establishment of a number of shopping centers, he said.
